There is a calling on my life....

Hey all,

Well, its 1:18 in the morning...and I am sick...high fever, chills, feeling hot and then cold...yep I have it all (except the coughing and runny nose...thank you Jesus!) so I am wide awake.

One of my favorite songs is this song by Vershawn Mitchell "Over and Over." This song talks about the reason why you are here...on this earth...God keeps waking you up in the middle of the night...and the questions is....WHAT AM I DOING HERE???!!!

God can speak to you in many ways...through people, through His word, through music...but you have to be willing and open to hearing it...

God spoke to me in the shower!!! yes the shower!!! And the crazy thing is...it was about my hair!!! I was contemplating washing my hair...because I have been so lazy with it...but I didnt because its cold outside and I didn't want to get sicker than I already was. What He said to me was "There is a calling on your life"

So for the past couple of months, I have been contemplating different styles for my hair...I have A LOT of hair...and its getting hard for me to handle...I wear braids but because its sooo soft it unravels and gets frizzy in a couple of days....it drives me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then I wanted sisterlocks but they are too much money for me right now...and then I thought about straightening my hair....which I did not want to do!!

So what does this have to do with me being in the shower and God speaking to me?? Here is the truth...I have never thought of myself as an attractive girl...and it was all mental for me...even when I lost the weight that I thought was holding me back...I still didnt feel pretty. Well a lot of people loved my long permed hair...and I was judged for it a lot of times...and also I recieved the wrong kind of attention from it, and I was tired of it...

So because I had low self esteem...my hair was my confidence...it was my ego...and I knew that if I really wanted to get "authentic" self esteem that I could finally LOVE myself the way I wanted too...so I CUT ALL MY HAIR OFF!!!

I was sooo upset...but I KNEW it was something I had to do....because God is a jealous God and he doesnt want you to worship anyone but HIM!!! and I felt that in order for me to be in tuned with God, I need to remove that thing I worshiped...and I told God that HE was in control...

But in the shower, I realized that, HE still wasnt in control....I decided for HIM that I would cut my hair...what if that wasn't my fake confidence? what if that was my calling on my life?? I realized that I didn't want to straighten my hair for the same reasons I didnt want to cut it...it was my security...I was flattered by the attention of my hair...and now..its "growing out of control"

I know what some of you are thinking...is she complaining about a head full of hair?? YES when you cant take care of it properly!!! What good is good hair if you cant do ANYTHING with it?? I have always loved hair...doing hair....ever since I was little...I actually taught myself how to conrow in the 3rd grade....and I use to watch every beauty show on tv!!!! My older sister was also in beauty school, and I use to get in trouble for playing with her things...especially the manakin head...lol

Maybe hair is the calling on my life...maybe by my hair going out of control, is telling me that I did the wrong thing, and that HE is in control....

Now Im not saying that I regret cutting it...but the reasons why I cut...I should have talked to GOD first....

So all tonight...me and God has a looong talk...and I opened my ears, and my heart...and I listened...and HE spoke to me...loud and clear!!!

It may not make since to you, but its not suppose too!!! God requires a INDIVIDUAL relationship with Him and what is for you could not be for me....

so I encourage everyone to talk to the LORD!!! Open your heart...ask the HOLY Spirit to take rest in you...I promise you..He will tell you your calling!!!!

okay so im sleepy now...part two...coming soon...lol

until next time,

Sisterlocks coming soon!!!

I am happy to say that I will be officially join the sisterlocks community soon! I have been natural for two years now, and honestly I really didn't expect my hair to grow soooo fast! For the past year, I have been frustrated with my hair, not knowing what to do with it! I have tried braids, but my hair is soft, so it doesn't last too long. Then there is the twist, and twist out, which is cool, but with my thick hair, it takes hours to do, and if I leave it in more than a couple of days, it starts to curl and lock up (really bad).

Then last year, while I was at a church service, I saw this lady who had beautiful dreads!! At first, I would have never ever thought of getting dreads, but after seeing hers, I wanted to see what else was out there. I knew I didn't want to go back to perms, but at the rate my hair was growing, I know that I couldn't last like this....so that is when I found SISTERLOCKS!

I have been researching them for about a year now, and I have gotten some positves and negatives about getting them. Ultimately its up to me!!! And I chose to pursue them.

The only thing that stopped me was MONEY!!! I am a broke college student, and money is tight!!! And even though I wanted them sooo bad now, I decided to wait until I graduated to get them, that way I knew that I would be able to take care of them.

But this weekend, I was at the Eumoja Festival, and I ran across a vendor who has a natural hair shop, and I told her about me longing for sisterlocks. God must have been looking out for me because she offered me a price that I couldn't refuse...and after that, I set up my appointment!!!

Ladies and Gents I am soooo excited, I am sooo ready to get them!!! So in about a month, I will be on my way to a new beginning in my natural journey...hey, isnt this what knew growth is all about???

Until next time,

My Knatural Journey

Here is a picture of me my senior year of high schoold before I went knatural. Never in a million years would I ever think I would go without a relaxer. I had always had long, thick hair, and always received many compliments on it, but, without a perm every 8 weeks, I thought I was helpless!!

This was a picture of me in April 2007 when I was transitioning. I had had my last relaxer of Christmas Eve 2006 and was well on my way to being natural. While my hair looked pretty good from a distance, when you got closer, you could see my roots screaming out for help! This was a hard time for me because I didn't know exactly what to do with my hair. I had a good amount of hair to do the "big chop", but I wasn't ready to give up my only bit of confidence that I had. I was in love with my hair, it defined me. But I knew that if I continued down this shallow road, that I would never gain the authentic confidence that I needed.

This is me and my mom attending a event at my church. After I realize how fast my hair was growing without the perm, I had to do something with it. I wasn't ready to cut it quite yet, so I got long kinky twist extensions in my hair. I loved it!

When I first told my mom that I was going natural, she called me crazy. But when she started researching the benefits of going natural, she decided to take the plunge with me! It's great to have support when you go through such a transition.

This picture was taking on my 20th birthday (July 2007). I had been transitioning 6 months and decided to get my straighten one more time. I also started to cut it off bit by bit, to make it easier when I finally decided to do the big chop. After this, I would have no other choice but to cut it, I was too anxious, to excited...a month later I decided that I would do the big chop.

I finally did it!!! I actually cut my hair!! August 2007 is when I started my journey. While I was scared of what people would think, I was excited about gaining my new found confidence, without my hair being my safety net. This is where my knatural journey began, but its not where it ends!!

until next time!!!

My Very First Blog!

Greetings everyone!!

So, this is my very first time blogging and I am very excited! I have always wanted to start my own blog, but never got around to doing it. This blog is about my journey to being natural. While I have been natural for 2 years now, I continue to learn new things everyday that I have never known about the natural world. Being natural for me is not just about my hair being healthy, its about all of me being healthy: Mind, Body and Spirit.

So as I share my journey with you, I hope that you, as well as I, find something new to talk about, to new to learn, so we can grow....hence the name "Knew Growth"

Until next time,
